These two yellow lights mean "You're driving a Volkswagen."

I know this all too well. VW's are a little too clever for themselves. Also makes driving one feel a bit like driving a nagging mother.

I used to joke that VW should change their logo to the "CHECK ENGINE" shape. I still do, actually.

What are they?

Mine shows cruise control on/off all the time (always on) but the other one? (NB: Aussie VW)

How true! As a former Jetta owner and current Passat owner, I think VW should just replace all the different warning lights with "$1000" because no matter what goes wrong, that seems to be the minimum repair bill.

Oh yes the MIL and EPS or Traction Control Warning Light.

I owned two VW's. A 92 MK2 and a 2005 MKIV. My 92 never had an issue after 150k, my 2005 blew 12 coil packs in one year. Now I drive an Audi A4. The Audi has not given me any issues after 100k thank god.

Hey VW, guess what the people don't want? Their dashboards lighting up like a Christmas tree!

And I thought it was just me... my Polo had the check engine light on for a while. Then it went off by itself. Then on again. Then off again. Now the coolant warning light comes on every time I start the car, even though the coolant is fine...

I've been staring at the CEL on my MkV GTI for the last two years. Trying to get it fixed and deal with VW has been one of the worst customer experiences of my life. Despite the number of their cars I've owned, I'll never drive one again.

Ha! Absolutely true. Loved the styling and driving feel, but couldn't hack the engineering and quality problems. I finally had to ditch a fully-loaded V6 Passat after many thousands spent chasing a never-ending stream of CELs and O2/hose replacements.

(Jeers as well to the State of Texas for deciding a car's own sensors/OBD should be used to determine emissions faults rather than, say, an actual inspection of the vehicle.)

So after two Audi/VW vehicles, I'm back to a slightly-used Honda which cost half as much... missing the Teutonic styling and the power, but utterly loving the maintenance-free engine and fuel savings -- having a car that "just works" with routine maintenance is a much more satisfying ownership experience for me.

I've owned a 95 B4 Passat Wagon (VR6), 2002 MKIV Jetta (2.0), and now own a 2004 MKIV .:R32 and I've never had the CEL. I do, however, disable ESP on most days while driving.

funny thing is that VW is considered problematic in the states. In europe, VW is regarded for its quality and reliability. I talked about this with my friends from the states and it seems the biggest problem lies in the petrol/diesel quality you guys have there. Specially with direct injection engines, like diesels and new VW FSI stuff, this is extremely important.
